Desert News - GOP brass visiting Utah

The orginal title said, "GOP brass visiting Utah -- Gov doesn't see S.L. as favorite for convention", but it was changed online to say, "Utah has better chance to host 2016 convention Herbert says."

Funny how a little pressure from the Governor can change a negative into a positive.

I wonder who will be driving the GOP BrASS around? We do have gay bars, but I'm not sure we have any transvestite bars, but if we do they should be excited about the possible extra couple thousand dollars they'll make tonight!

And, think of the new bars that might come to town if only they could get a liquor license. Maybe the legislature will change the laws to accommodate GOP leadership for their 2012 convention.

At least they know who to call if they want to find a hot tub for a round of naked -- you can look but don't touch -- solitaire.

The Deseret News learned of the allegations against Garn just before the GOP primary election in 2002. Garn sat down and spoke about the incident with Deseret News reporters and editors.
At the time, Garn and now-U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, were in a tight primary race seeking the Republican nomination for the 1st Congressional District and Garn was the Utah House majority leader, a position he has, again, achieved.
Deseret News editors decided not to run a story about the indiscretion at that time, since the GOP primary was only weeks away and the incident had occurred years before.
The editors decided to wait to see if Garn advanced in the primary before deciding whether to publish a story.
Because Garn lost that primary, and therefore was also retiring from the Utah House, the newspaper never published a story.

The D News owes the public an apology. Report the news and let your readers decide how to feel about it.

What do you do when you know your Democratic opponent is going to take back your district's house seat?

You go after a higher paying job.

You may have worn out your welcome at your last job.

But so what,

you've got friends,

and you might be able to help them get something they want.

They twist a few arms.

They raise you money.

The last Republican candidate approximately spent 10,000.00 bucks on their statewide campaign.

But no worries.

For your bosses,

10,000 dollars,

is chickenfeed.

And they want to control everything.

They do have a little clout,

but even their influence,

can't win you the nomination at convention.

Because too many delegates understood the truth.

That you're,

not,

qualified!

And your opponent,

Richard Ellis,

is.

"Doesn't matter!", you tell yourself,

because you've got buddies,

and they have money.

You become so cocky you offer your opponent a job if he drops out.

But he won't,

because he has integrity,

and he too knows,

that you're,

not,

qualified.

He turns you in.

But not to worry, the current attorney general is the one of your buddies, and he's helping you finance your campaign.

And the lieutenant governor won't do diddly,

because he's one of your buddies,

and to hell with ethics when it's between friends.

And if foe some God awful reason,

you do get elected,

and you don't know what to do.

Just remember,

you have no worries,

because your buddies will fix it,

and tell you what to do.

Yes! Really! Churches are among the wealthiest organizations in the world. They have that money to do God's work. Maybe they should use it to make God's children smarter.

I would like to know how others felt about the article titled Deseret News editor's speech raises questions.

I agree with Kelly McBride of the Poynter Institute, who said, "I have problems with journalists ever attending something and saying that it's not as a journalist or not acting as a journalist, Journalists need to be very clear - either stuff is on the record and it is open for being recorded or it's off the record. The bar is even higher when the attendees are public officials and former public officials..., Whenever you have high-powered people who are paid by taxpayers, there is an even higher threshold to allowing those people control of what you cover."

I also agree with Weber State University journalism professor Allison Barlow Hess who said, "a role in educating the public whenever possible, including politicians and partisan groups. But Cannon's promise not to cover an event at which he is speaking is questionable."

Ironically the the last editor of the Deseret News was John Hughes, a Vietnam reporter who won the Pulitzer. He may have been a conservative, but he was also a bonafide and serious newspaper reporter. He also had the credentials to run The Deseret News unlike Cannon whose jobs since 2001 was to lead Utah's Republican Party as the Republican state party chairman.

Why Deseret News board president Ellis Ivory made the decision to hire Cannon is unknown to me, but in Utah the name of the GOP game has been to influence local news without any regard for the fundamental tradition that newspapers are there to report the facts, and only the facts. When a editor, or any other reporter for a major local paper makes accommodations for a select group of citizens then one should ask, who does this person really work for?

I think McBride statement, "That Cannon promised council leaders he would not write about what was discussed should alarm his readers because he is shifting his loyalty from them to powerful government insiders" completely hits the mark.

"To have an editor agree to that [confidentiality] sends a really bad message that [journalists] are willing to play by their terms..., and that our loyalties are with them and not with our audience. In letting [the council] set the rules and the agenda of who you can quote and who you can't quote - that says to the audience that these people are more important than you."

If the Deseret News wants to continue to be viewed as a citizens newspaper and not a partisan rag sheet then they should read the Society of Professional Journalist's Code of Ethics sheet that states:

Act Independently
Journalists should be free of obligations to any interest other than the public's right to know.

Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived
Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.
Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable.

and,

Seek Truth and Report it

Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting.
Recognize a special obligation to ensure that the public's business is conducted in the open..."

The Deseret News Board should consider being vigilant and courageous by finding a editor who actually understands that there are ethics associated with the job. It might be wise to also hire someone who is actually has some experience.

Wake up Deseret News and "Fire the Cannon!"
